Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford started to become fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she was already making her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
